UPDATE: Erev Shabbos Kodesh Parshas Va,eira
In Parshas Vayigash, the Passuk tells us that when Yakov Avinu heard the incredible news about Yosef: "Od Yosef Chai, V'chi Hu Moshel B'chol Eretz Mitzrayim", he still couldn't believe the brothers, it was only after Yakov Avinu saw the Agolos (wagons) Yosef had sent that Yakov Avinu believed the brothers, as the Pasuk says: "Vatichi Ruach Yakov Avihem".
The Meforshim explain: Yakov Avinu only believed the brothers after seeing the wagons because Yosef had actually sent these wagons to hint to Yakov Avinu that he remembered the last Sugya that they had learnt together 22 years earlier when Yakov Avinu had sent him to check on his brothers welfare - the Parsha of "Eglah" Arufa (the decapitated calf, the words "Eglah" and "Agala" share the root letters Ayin, Gimmel, & Lamed).
The Meforshim ask, though, why DID Yakov Avinu specifically learn the Parshah of Eglah Arufah with Yosef before sending him to check on his brothers? Furthermore, why did Yakov Avinu send Yosef to check on the brothers to begin with? Didn't Yakov Avinu know that the brothers hated Yosef so much they couldn't even talk to him in peace? Didn't he realize what could (& actually did!) happen if he sends Yosef into their company so far away from home?
Perhaps we can answer both of these questions with one idea. The Tiferes Shlomo of Radomsk explains that when Yakov Avinu sent Yosef to check on his brothers welfare, he knew good and well the dangers involved. However, he sent Yosef anyway, and in doing so communicated a very powerful message. He explains: Yakov Avinu knew that Yosef would be his successor as the next "Av" of Klal Yisroel (In fact, the Gemara says that when Yakov Avinu sent Yosef on this mission, he escorted him from Eretz Canaan to Avraham Avinu's Kever in Chevron, which is why the Pasuk Says he sent Yosef "Me'emek Chevron", "from the valley of Chevron", even though the city of Chevron is on a hill, not in a valley! The Gemara explains, Yakov Avinu inaugurated Yosef as the next forefather OF Klal Yisroel by sending him from The "Etzah 'Amuka' Shel Oso 'Chaver Naeh'", from the deep counsel of that great Tzaddik, I.e. our original forefather, Avraham Avinu. This idea is also supported by Yakov Avinu's transferring of the Bechora to Yosef, etc.).
Based on this, the Tiferes Shlomo explains, Yakov Avinu (through his actions) was telling Yosef: As a leader of Klal Yisroel, your first task will be to check on your brothers and see how they are doing - EVEN THOUGH they hate you and EVEN THOUGH they can't look at you or talk to you peacefully! Because you are in a position of leadership, you need to go above and beyond in ensuring that those whose welfare you are responsible for are completely taken care of.
Similarly, at this "handing over of the reigns", Yakov Avinu taught Yosef the Parshah of the Eglah Arufa, where the leaders of the city closest to the discovered corpse proclaim: "We didn't let this visitor leave our town without giving him a respectable escort out of the city" (see Gemara Sotah, bottom of 45B)
In other words, the leaders of the city are saying - we fulfilled our responsibilities as the leaders of this city by not only taking care of any possible need this visitor had, but we even went beyond that, by giving him a respectable escort out of the city".
Clearly Yakov Avinu was communicating to Yosef that to be a leader of Klal Yisroel, one needs to go above and beyond the normal expectations and levels of Asiyas Chesed.
Chazal established the Yomtov of Chanukah in response to two Nissim: the Neis of the Pach Shemen and the Neis of the Milchamah. Both of these Nissim demonstrated that for Klal Yisroel, the world does not need to run Al Pi Derech Hatevah. Only in Klal Yisroel's world can oil miraculously burn for 8 days and nights. Only in Klal Yisroel's world can a relatively small group consisting of Rabbonim, Melandim and Talmidei Chachamim overpower the mighty Greek army!
Similarly, by the Siyum Hashas, we saw the tremendous power generated by Klal Yisroel uniting as one Tzibbur. The energy we felt, the Chizuk we received, truly everything about that event was Lemayla Min Hateva.
If we want to utilize and concretize the inspiration of these two occasions, we need to take the lesson from Yakov Avinu's sending Yosef to check on his brothers; we need to take the lesson from the Ziknei Ha'ir's proclamation in the Parshah of Eglah Arufa, "Yadeinu Lo Shafchah Es Hadum Hazeh"
By donating to A TIME; by supporting the Shasathon, one is truly doing Chesed on a level that is Lemayla Min Hateva.
Putting aside for a moment the unfathomable Zechus of Limud Hatorah and Hachzakas Hatorah which is obviously beyond our imagination...
When someone donates to A TIME, they are doing chesed with a group of people, (possibly their own friends or family!) that Al Pi Derech Hatevah they would not be able to help or support...
Al Pi Derech Hatevah most people are not in the financial position to sponsor tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for treatments that may or may not work…
Al Pi Derech Hatevah most people can not arrange for a couple to get an appointment the next day with a top Doctor or specialist in the field...
Al Pi Derech Hatevah most people are not able to help a couple navigate the complicated conditions, factors, and bi-laws determining whether this crucial treatment or procedure will be covered by their insurance or not...
Perhaps most importantly… most people are not in a position to offer Chizuk or consolation to the many many couples going through this scary Parshah, lonely and isolated. The sensitive and personal nature of this challenge makes it a conversation that Al Pi Derech Hatevah doesn't come up…
By helping A TIME, you are truly doing Chesed Lemayla Min Hateva - you are doing all of those Chasadim listed above which Al Pi Derech Hatevah would not be within your abilities! Let us use this opportunity to be Mamshich the Chizuk of Chanukah and the 13th Global Siyum Hashas of Daf Yomi by doing this act of Chesed that is Lemayla Min Hateva. In the Zchus of our doing Chesed that is above and beyond, we should be Zocheh, as the Maharal (Nesivos Olam, Beginning of Nesiv Gemilas Chesed) says, to H-shem going above and beyond for us, helping us receive all the Brachos and Yeshuos that we need in our own lives, Amen!!
Motzai Shabbos Kodesh Parshas Vayishlach,
December 14, 2019
To our dear family and freinds, עמו"ש
In the Parshah we read today, Yakov Avinu's davens to Hashem and says the famous words “Katonti Mikol Hachasadim Umikol Haemes Asher Asisa Es Avdecha...”
While most Meforshim seem to understand Yakov’s concern as being the possibility that his Zechuyos were diminished because of the kindnesses Hashem had dealt him, or because of the possibility of Shema Yigrom Hachet, the Chovos Halevovos learns differently. According to the Chovos Halevovos (in Shaar Avodas Ha'Elokim, Perek Vuv, D"H Arba'ah Devarim, see Marpeh Lanefesh there) Yakov Avinu was afraid that because of the Chasadim he had received from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, his obligation to express Hakaras Hatov was so humongous and so great that perhaps he had fallen short of the level of expression of gratitude and praise that was expected of him in light of everything he had received, and that was what caused him to feel afraid.
Within the past year we were Zocheh to experience incredible Nissim /Yad Hashem in so many ways, both big and small, that are too numerous to even attempt to quantify, and specifically through the Zarah Chaya Vekayama we’ve been entrusted with.
Katonti Mekol Hachasadim Umekol Haemes… the Chiyuv to show Hakaras Hatov we feel is so great, what can we possibly “give” back to Hashem that would express some level of Hakaras Hatov?
The answer is ATime,
The answer is Shasathon,
The answer is the realization that any Bracha we have been given is not just ours for the keeping but to spread to others - as many others as possible - to give to as many people in as many ways as possible.
The answer is joining this special Mosad, whose singular goal is to ease the overwhelming burden of those facing the tremendous challenge of infertility and providing them every type of support possibly imaginable.
Taking part in this unique event of Hachzakas and Limud Hatorah (which will bezH take place on sunday, February 16th at the ocean place resort in long branch, NJ) as a Zchus for these families, deepens the message to Hashem and to ourselves, that we appreciate the tremendous Bracha we have received and more importantly, understand the need to share it with as many Yidden as possible by helping them receive the help, Chizuk, and support they need to continue on their journey to "Hayeladim Asher Chanan Elokim Es Avdecha".
By joining us in helping us reach our fundraising goal, you will be helping this special organization continue its amazing work, and possibly just as important if not more, you will be showing Hashem that you not only appreciate all the Shefa and Brachos he has given you, but that you want to help spread them to his children as well.
Our learning should bezH be a Zchus for a complete Refuah Shelaimah for
Tinok ben Rochel Bisoich Shaar Cholei Yisroel,
And as a Zchus for Zarah Chayah Vikayama for
